Lee Yee Hing Sterling Silver Ashtray with 1899 British Trade Dollar, Hong Kong, C.1920

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely made Hong Kong sterling silver ashtray by Lee Yee Hing, dating from circa 1920. Combining a recognised maker's mark with an authentic British Trade Dollar, it is a fine example of Hong Kong colonial silver from the early twentieth century.

The ashtray is of circular form with three cigarette rests and a broad polished rim. At its centre is an authentic 1899 British Trade Dollar, one of the best-known silver coins of Britain's Far Eastern trade network. Known to collectors as the “Standing Britannia” dollar, it depicts Britannia holding a trident and a shield bearing the Union Flag. The coin was struck in .900 silver, weighs 26.95 grams and was produced at the Bombay Mint.

The underside displays the reverse of the dollar with the Chinese longevity symbol Shou and inscriptions in Chinese and Malay denoting “One Dollar”. The design reflects the meeting of British imperial commerce and Chinese cultural tradition that characterised colonial Hong Kong.

Lee Yee Hing was a recognised Hong Kong silversmith active circa 1900–1940. His firm's silver formed part of the thriving export trade supplying Asian luxury goods to Western buyers. Collectors value such pieces for their combination of documented Hong Kong manufacture, sterling silver construction and authentic Trade Dollar content.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese Export silver tobacciana refers to silver items crafted in China and Hong Kong from the late 18th century through the early 20th century specifically for foreign markets, often combining traditional silversmithing techniques with Western functional forms like ashtrays and cigarette boxes.

These dishes were constructed using solid silver or high-purity sterling silver, featuring genuine historical trade coins embedded in the centre, joined using skilled soldering techniques.

Authentic pieces feature silversmith maker stamps or shop marks, appropriate silver weight, fine relief details on the embedded original currency, and signs of period hand-tooling.

Place the piece on an office desk, coffee table, or entry console to serve as a small coin tray, paperweight, or decorative catchall alongside books and structured accessories.

Clean gently using a soft silver polishing cloth and mild silver cream where necessary, avoiding abrasive materials or submersion to prevent damaging delicate details and natural tarnish highlights.
