We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sterling silver ashtrays gained widespread popularity in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as luxury smoking accessories for gentlemans clubs and private residences. Silversmiths crafted these functional items with intricate rims, family crests, and assay hallmarks to reflect social standing and craftsmanship.

Traditional pieces were crafted from 925 sterling silver, constructed through spinning, casting, or hand-hammering techniques. Rims were often reinforced with reeded or gadrooned borders, while central depressions were hand-engraved with crests or monograms.

Authentic British sterling silver items feature a complete set of hallmarks, including the makers mark, lion passant quality mark, town mark, and date letter. Engraved heraldic crests, substantial weight, and age-appropriate wear near the rests also help confirm authenticity.

These versatile silver vessels work effectively as refined catchall dishes for cufflinks or rings on a bedside table, or as decorative accent pieces on a library desk or coffee table tray. Their neutral metallic finish complements both contemporary and classic decor.

Wash gently in warm water with mild detergent to remove surface residue, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Apply a specialist silver polish periodically using a microfibre cloth to remove tarnish and prevent oxidisation without abrasive scrubbing.
