18th century
Description

ATTRIBUTED TO MARIE LECZINSKA, QUEEN OF FRANCE (POLISH 1703-1768), AFTER FRANÇOIS-ANDRÉ VINCENT HEAD STUDY OF A YOUNG GIRL WITH BANDEAU

Medium: Red and black chalk on paper

Dimensions: 36.5 x 26.5cm

Provenance:

Prominent Old Master, British and European Art Auction, England.

The G. S. May Esquire Private Collection, London, England.

After the original work now in the MAH Musée d'art et d'histoire, Geneva, or the print by Gilles-Antoine Demarteau (1750-1802).

Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800 (Online Edition).

Ref: https://www.pastellists.com/Articles/MLeszczynska.pdf

An elegant mid-to-late 18th-century trois crayons study depicting the downcast profile of a classical young Girl wearing a traditional bandeau headband. The work showcases a highly sophisticated handling of blended sanguine (red chalk) to model the soft flesh tones of the face and neck, dynamically contrasted by sharp, structural contours in pierre noire (black chalk) defining the hair and classical drapery.

The drawing reflects the grand academic tradition of the mid-18th-century French Court, aligning with the private studio copying practices of Queen Marie Leszczyńska and her immediate circle at Versailles under the guidance of court masters like Joseph-Marie Vien.

Condition & Presentation:

Housed in a classic French wash-line mount and presented in an attractive gilt gallery frame, ready for immediate exhibition.

A faint, historic horizontal crease is visible across the lower chest portion of the sheet, entirely stable and wholly clear of the pristine facial features.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century French portrait drawings often utilise soft mediums such as chalk or pastel to capture subtle facial expressions and classical form, reflecting Rococo and Neoclassical stylistic influences.

Artists commonly employed red, black, and white chalks on laid papera technique known as trois crayonsto create subtle skin tones, highlights, and shadow gradients.

Authentic works from this period typically feature laid paper with visible chain lines or watermarks, natural age toning, and fine hand-drawn chalk strokes rather than modern mechanical dots.

Displaying framed historical drawings on a gallery wall alongside modern artwork or positioned above a console table provides a structured contrast between classic draftsmanship and contemporary decor.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, frame the artwork behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials and hang it away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity.
