18th Century George II Mahogany Drop-leaf Dining Table, C1760

18th century
Description

Untouched Mid 18th-Century George II Mahogany Drop-Leaf Dining Table

An exceptionally untouched mid-18th century George II period mahogany drop-leaf dining table, retaining its original, finely figured solid mahogany tops and a superb, gently faded patina.

The circular oval top is formed from richly figured Cuban mahogany, with a moulded edge and twin drop leaves that provide excellent versatility: comfortably seating four when open, yet folding neatly away to save space when not in use. The depth of colour and grain across the top is outstanding, the timber having developed a beautiful, warm glow and inviting surface over more than 250 years.

The leaves are supported by robust, hinged gate legs, a classic Georgian feature that offers both strength and ease of use. The legs themselves are well drawn, of cabriole and tapered form, terminating in pad feet that add a restrained elegance to the overall silhouette. The joints are solid and the construction reassuringly sound, reflecting the quality of 18th-century craftsmanship.

Unrestored surfaces of this quality are increasingly rare. The table’s original finish, rich colour and enticing patina give it a timeless allure and a wonderful sense of history, allowing it to sit equally well in a period setting or a more contemporary interior as a characterful focal point.

This is an outstanding Georgian mahogany drop-leaf dining or supper table, a functional, versatile and highly decorative piece, perfect as a dining table for four, an elegant centre or side table, or an atmospheric serving table in a hall, library or sitting room.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II drop-leaf table dates from between 1727 and 1760, characterised by hinged side leaves supported by swing-out legs. Designed for adaptability, these tables provide a compact profile when closed and a larger dining surface when extended.

Dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany was the primary wood utilized during the mid-18th century due to its structural strength and grain clarity. Internal framing typically incorporates oak or pine as secondary woods, secured with hand-forged iron hinges.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn timber construction, hand-carved pad or club feet, and original iron strap hinges underneath the leaves. The mahogany displays natural patination, subtle surface wear, and oxidation consistent with age.

The table can be positioned against a wall with leaves lowered to serve as a side table or console. When opened for dining, combining the historical mahogany with contemporary seating creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice per year. Maintain stable humidity levels and avoid placing the timber near direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage or warping.
