Sheraton Revival Inlaid Mahogany Corner Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality Sheraton Revival mahogany corner cabinet, beautifully decorated with intricate satinwood, harewood and boxwood marquetry in the neoclassical manner. The cabinet is of elegant bow-fronted form, designed to fit neatly into the corner of a room whilst providing useful storage and display space.

The pair of cupboard doors are veneered in richly figured flame mahogany and centred with finely inlaid classical urns suspended within oval reserves, a motif inspired by the work of the celebrated late 18th century cabinet maker Thomas Sheraton. Above, the shaped frieze is adorned with scrolling foliate marquetry, while the canted corners are embellished with further inlaid ornament. The cabinet stands on elegant tapering legs terminating in delicate inlaid detail.

The top is particularly striking, featuring a fan-shaped marquetry panel with scrolling foliage and stylised floral motifs enclosed within a satinwood banded border, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Sheraton Revival movement.

The interior is fitted with a shaped shelf, providing practical storage behind the lockable doors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival refers to late nineteenth and early twentieth-century furniture made in the style of designer Thomas Sheraton. Key characteristics include neoclassical proportions, slender legs, satinwood inlays, and geometric veneer patterns.

These cabinets are predominantly constructed from mahogany or satinwood, featuring contrasting timber marquetry such as boxwood, tulipwood, or rosewood, alongside brass keyhole escutcheons and glass or solid panel doors.

Revival pieces produced around 1890 to 1910 often exhibit machine-assisted joinery alongside hand-finishing, precise symmetrical marquetry, and late Victorian or Edwardian construction markers on interior drawers and backboard framing.

Position the piece in an underutilised ninety-degree wall space to maximise floor area while adding architectural interest. Pair the warm mahogany tones with modern neutral wall colours or contemporary brass lighting fixtures.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer movement.
