Antique Brass Rise and Fall Chandelier with Glass Shades

1900 - 1920
Description

Edwardian brass rise and fall chandelier with glass shades. The chandelier is suspended from a brass ceiling rose and retains its original counterweight mechanism, allowing the fitting to be raised and lowered. The weights are finished with decorative brass finials and flowers. The central column is decorated with embossed leaf decoration, while the arms are ornamented with scrolls, leaves and floral motifs. A matching decorative weight to the base echoes the counterweights, creating a balanced design. Originally a gas fitting, this chandelier has been sympathetically converted to electricity. The rise and fall mechanism operates, although the current shades are heavier than the originals and the fitting should be secured at the desired height. Height adjusts from approximately 135 cm at its shortest to 180 cm when fully lowered. Width is measured across the outside edges of the glass shades 80cm. Fitted with three B22 (large bayonet) bulb holders.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rise and fall chandeliers originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as modern lighting evolved to require adjustable height options. Designed with internal or external counterbalance weights, these fixtures permitted users to lower the light closer to tables for task lighting or raise it toward the ceiling for general ambient illumination.

These lighting fixtures were primarily crafted from solid brass or bronze due to their durability and ease of casting detailed decorative elements. The counterweights were filled with lead or iron to balance the fixture, while shades were typically made from pressed, blown, or etched glass.

Authentic period examples often feature cast brass pulleys, weighted urns or acorns, and natural surface patination around working mechanisms. Inspection of electrical wiring typically reveals early porcelain connector blocks, cloth-covered cords, or signs of historical conversion from gas fittings.

A rise and fall chandelier functions well suspended directly above a dining table or kitchen island. Positioned against muted or deep wall shades, the warm metal tones and glass detailing provide functional overhead illumination while acting as a structural focal point.

Glass shades should be carefully removed and washed with mild soapy water before drying thoroughly. Brass surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth; harsh abrasive polish should be avoided to preserve the natural age patination.
