19th century
Description

Late 19th century, French, bronze figure of Danaides with a Bowl. The female figure leaning over a twin handled bowl on stand. Possibly cast by barbedienne.

Height 10 3/4” (27.3cm)

Width 4 1/4” (12.8cm)

Depth 5” (12.7cm)

French

Circa 1880

According to Greek mythology, the Danaides were the fifty daughters of King Danaos of Argos, who was in conflict with his brother Aegyptos, father of fifty sons. The fifty sons went to Argos to propose marriage to the Danaides as a conciliatory gesture towards Danaos. Danaos resented his brother and ordered his daughters to murder their bridegrooms on their wedding night. They proceeded, except all but one. As a result of their crimes, the Danaides were sentenced to the underworld where their unending penance was to fill pierced jugs with water. The original of this statue is located in the Vatican Museum, Rome, carved in the 4th century BC.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour bronzes are small-scale cast bronze reproductions of classical Greco-Roman statues. Produced mainly throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, they were purchased by affluent European travellers visiting historic cultural sites in Italy and Greece as educational souvenirs.

Nineteenth-century bronze sculptures were predominantly crafted using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting techniques. The cast metal was then hand-chased to refine surface details before applying chemical patinas to achieve rich brown, dark green, or black finishes.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit significant weight, hand-finished sharp details in the hair and drapery, and natural surface wear consistent with age. Look for crisp casting lines, authentic patination in recessed areas, and traditional cold-chasing marks rather than uniform modern machine finishes.

Classical bronzes serve as effective accent pieces when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table alongside contemporary textures. Contrast the dark, structured metal against light stone surfaces, timber joinery, or neutral backdrops to highlight the silhouette.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush. To preserve the patina, apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax annually, gently buffing it once dry, while keeping the piece away from damp environments and harsh chemical cleaners.
