A fine example of an 18thc opaque twist wine glass, it has a plain ogee bowl above a double series opaque twist stem consisting of a 12-ply spiral band outside a solid spiral tape....it stands on a wide conical foot and this attractive wine glass is in very good condition with no cracks or breaks.

Opaque twist wine glasses were developed in England around 1755 as a response to the Glass Excise Act of 1745. The design features internal strands of white opaque enamel glass trapped within the stem, created by pulling and twisting rods of glass during the hand-blowing process.

These glasses were hand-blown using English lead crystal glass, valued for its clarity and weight. Opaque white enamel canes were arranged inside a mould, covered with clear molten glass, pulled, and twisted to form the spiral pattern before being attached to the bowl and conical foot.

Authentic Georgian glasses display hand-manufactured features such as a pontil mark or ground pontil area beneath the base, slight asymmetry, small air bubbles, and natural wear marks on the bottom rim of the foot.

Antique glassware can be styled on a sideboard top, arranged inside a backlit glazed cabinet, or presented alongside contemporary barware. Grouping stems of varying heights adds architectural geometry to modern dining spaces.

Hand wash individual glasses using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent. Avoid dishwashers and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can trigger thermal shock and cause fracturing in historical lead glass.
