Mezzotint Portrait of Diana Viscountess Crosbie Engraved by W Dickinson and Watson After Sir Joshua Reynolds.

18th century
Description

MEZZOTINT PORTRAIT OF DIANA VISCOUNTESS CROSBIE ENGRAVED BY W DICKINSON AND WATSON AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS.

Fine mezzotint portrait depicting Diana full-length, standing outdoors under a cloudy sky. She is posed dynamically, holding her voluminous dress with her right hand while her left hand is extended, holding a string or chain. Her expression is described as mirthful and far from the demure expectation for a society lady of the era, conveying an air of informality and spontaneity.

Viscountess Crosbie wears a light coloured silk gown, and its material is gathered in a style reflective of the trend toward naturalism in the late 1700s. ?The background landscape is populated with trees, including a prominent birch to the left, and a more open, and a hilly landscape in the distance. The portrait in its entirety reflects the type of "fashionable negligence" popular at the time, which is a departure from the rigid formality of previous decades.?

Date: Sept 20th 1769

Sheet Dimensions: 63cm x 53cm.

Framed Dimensions: 70cm x 60cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mezzotint is a tonal printmaking process from the intaglio family that allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow, widely popular in 18th-century Britain for reproducing oil portraits.

They were produced by working a copper plate with a metal rocker to create a textured surface, which was then selectively smoothed, inked, and printed onto laid rag paper.

Authentic examples exhibit rich tonal depth, distinct platemarks pressed into hand-laid paper, and fine engraved publication details along the lower margin.

Framed monochrome prints pair well with contemporary minimalist decor, framed gallery walls, or placed above sideboards to add visual contrast.

Keep prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity, using acid-free mounting materials and UV-protective glass to prevent discolouration or foxing.
