Antique Edwardian Mahogany Work Table C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A small Edwardian mahogany work table of oval form in the Sheraton Revival style. The well-figured quarter-veneered top set over a single small drawer and lower sliding work basket, all raised on slender line-inlaid legs united by a serpentine X-stretcher centred by a turned finial.

Fully finished on the reverse to allow for freestanding placement, its diminutive footprint and delicate proportions allow it to work well as occasional piece beside seating or even as small bedside table where space is at a premium.

Very good antique condition, with some surface wear consistent with age and historic repairs to the stretchers. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1910.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian work table is a compact piece of occasional furniture produced between 1901 and 1910, designed primarily for needlework, embroidery, and craft activities. These tables typically incorporate a flat top surface, a shallow drawer for small tools, and a suspended fabric basket or silk pouch to hold textiles.

Cabinetmakers during the Edwardian period predominantly used timber such as mahogany, satinwood, and rosewood, often accented with brass fittings, turned stretchers, and pleated fabric or silk linings for the suspended work basket.

Authentic Edwardian work tables feature lightweight and slender proportions, fine hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate brass hardware, and refined turned or splayed legs often connected by a decorative cross-stretcher.

Due to its compact footprint and versatile design, an antique work table functions effectively as an accent side table beside an armchair, a unique bedside table, or a decorative display piece in a hallway corner.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a clean, dry cloth and applying a light coat of high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources.
