Antique Edwardian Walnut Carved Armchair Occasional Parlour Upholstered Chair

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Edwardian Walnut Lounge Chair.

An Elegant Turn of the Century Finely Carved Walnut Armchair.

An elegant and finely detailed Edwardian Walnut armchair, dating from the turn of the century, circa 1900. This handsome example represents the high-quality cabinetmaking of the period, drawing on historic design influences to create a comfortable and visually striking occasional chair.

The backrest features uprights detailed with crisp vertical incised lines that accentuate the columned stiles, finishing with neatly carved scrolled ears at the top. Positioned below the back cushion is an eye-catching pierced horizontal splat, featuring a central shield-shaped reserve beautifully carved with traditional Edwardian floral and foliate motifs. This decorative carving is paired with structured openwork spindles beneath the padded armrests, which incorporate a central diamond-shaped boss with a carved rosette flanked by delicate fan turnings. The front arm supports are beautifully engineered, featuring distinctive reeded bulbous turnings that give the upper frame a wonderful architectural presence.

The chair stands on substantial, sharply turned front legs that perfectly mirror this design, carrying the identical reeded bulbous details as they taper down to the original brass and black porcelain castors. The rear legs are gently swept to provide excellent stability and a balanced profile. The seat, back, and arm cushions are upholstered in a rich crimson velour fabric, neatly finished with a coordinating woven textile braid. The Walnut timber retains a wonderful deep colour and an authentic historic patination throughout, making this a sophisticated piece that speaks for itself.

Condition Report The frame is structurally sound, with all joints remaining firm, strong, and secure. The original Walnut timber has a beautiful rich tone and an honest patina, showing only light signs of age-related use and minor surface marks consistent with a piece of this age. The crimson upholstery is used but remains in generally good, clean condition throughout, coming from a smoke and pet-free home. Crucially, the traditionally sprung base and inner padding are in great condition; the seat is exceptionally comfortable, supporting the weight well without any clunks or creaks when sat in. The original black porcelain castors remain in good, functional order.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian parlour armchairs feature lighter proportions than earlier Victorian designs, incorporating intricate wood carving, turned legs, upholstered pads, and low-slung frames.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, paired with traditional coil springs, webbing, horsehair padding, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature turned or cabriole legs, carved back splats or rails, original brass or ceramic castors, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

An antique walnut armchair works as an accent piece in a study, living room corner, or bedroom, paired alongside modern floor lamps and neutral paint schemes.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a dry cloth and treated with natural beeswax, while fabric upholstery should be gently vacuumed using a soft brush attachment.
