Lincoln Restorations has dated these Edwardian Oak Captains Chairs to the 1910s.
An outstanding Set of Edwardian Solid Oak Smoker's Bow Captains Chairs, circa 1910
Crafted entirely from high-grade solid Oak, these armchairs were traditionally found in the prestigious surroundings of offices, libraries, and boardrooms of the Edwardian and early Interwar period.

The design is defined by the sweeping, low-slung horseshoe armrests, which terminate in elegantly out-turned scroll grips. This heavy bow is supported by a series of robust, shaped vertical splats that provide both excellent lumbar support and a striking silhouette. Highlighting the institutional build quality of the set, each chair retains its original, heavy brass strengthening strap securely fixed to the rear of the central back splats - a superb original manufacturing detail designed to reinforce the frame for a lifetime of use. The thick, solid Oak saddle seats are deeply contoured for comfort, showing off the magnificent, dense grain configuration and medullary rays characteristic of quartersawn timber. Each chair is raised upon substantial, ring-turned front legs and gently splayed out curved rear legs, retaining their brass and black porcelain castors to all legs.

The timber possesses a wonderfully rich, deep nut-brown colour with a beautifully developed historic patina. They are a highly versatile set, perfect for daily use around a dining table, as a striking set of boardroom chairs, or paired with an antique partner's desk.

Condition Report The chairs have been thoroughly checked over in our workshop, ensuring all frames and joints remain structurally sound, tight, and completely stable. The solid Oak displays a superb, deep patina with only minor, authentic age-related surface wear, historic marks and the odd minor repair as to be expected with honest period furniture. A truly excellent, usable set of heavy commercial grade ready to go straight into the home or office.

Provenance Note These chairs were acquired from the same historic estate as an exceptional, matching Edwardian octagonal games and poker table of the exact same period. The timber, deep nut-brown colour, and finish match perfectly, making them an incredible combination. While we are offering the chairs and the table as separate listings to suit individual requirements, they would make an outstanding, complete ensemble. The matching games table is also available to purchase separately via our online shop at the time of listing
