A Delftware barbers bowl is a specialized tin-glazed earthenware vessel produced primarily in the Netherlands during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Characterized by a distinctive semi-circular crescent cutout along the rim, these bowls were designed to fit snugly under a persons chin during shaving or medical bloodletting procedures.

Eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware was constructed from local clay fired at lower temperatures, then coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Cobalt oxide was predominantly applied by hand before the final firing to create the characteristic blue painted decoration.

Authentic pieces feature a reddish-brown or buff-coloured earthenware body visible beneath chips or wear on the rim, hand-painted cobalt decoration with slight variations in brushwork, and characteristic pinholes or glaze imperfections from kiln stilts on the underside.

These decorative ceramic vessels are frequently mounted on walls in gallery groupings or presented upright on plate stands atop sideboards and shelving units to accentuate their graphic blue and white motifs.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid immersion in water, scrubbing, or using harsh chemical cleansers, as moisture can enter fine glaze cracks and cause delamination of the glaze layer.
