Set of Four George III Painted Chairs

18th century
Description

A rather stunning set of four George III painted chairs.

Circa 1800.

Most interesting drawn, with an almost art-deco design to the back rests.

The finely hand painted details really pop and make for a super decorative and versatile set of chairs.

The construction of the chairs and style in which they have been painted leans towards an attribution to Gillows.

Structurally sound, seats intact, some paintwork has been refreshed- historically and sympathetically.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III painted furniture, popular in the late 18th century, often features Neoclassical motifs, delicate hand-painted floral decoration, and lacquered finishes inspired by classical antiquity and Asian decorative arts.

These chairs typically utilised European hardwoods such as beech, birch, or pine as a frame for paint application, frequently paired with woven rush or cane seating surfaces.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural surface craquelure, subtle wear to hand-painted details where hands and clothing make contact, hand-carved joinery, and visible age on the wooden undertones.

Antique painted side chairs can be integrated alongside modern dining tables, placed as accent seating in hallways, or arranged individually in bedrooms to create visual contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Keep painted surfaces free of excess moisture and harsh chemicals, dusting lightly with a soft microfibre cloth; rush seats should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent natural fibres from drying out.
