Antique Uzbek Lakai tribe ilgich, dowry wall hanging for the yurt.

Circa 1900.

Ilgich are embroidered hangings that usually formed part of a brides dowry; they are talismanic and considered to be protective. This example is embroidered in silk on a red Mogul cotton ground, it is made up from fragments of an earlier date.

The condition is good with some very slight age related wear.

An ilgich is a square embroidered textile panel created by the Lakai, a nomadic Uzbek tribe inhabiting Central Asia. Traditionally crafted by women as part of a bridal dowry, these textiles were displayed inside felt tents (yurts) as decorative wall hangings and symbolic talismans.

Lakai embroideries typically feature silk threads worked onto a foundation of hand-woven cotton or silk fabric, known as iKAT or plain cloth. Common needlework techniques include chain stitch and cross-stitch, finished with braided silk fringes, tassels, or cloth borders.

Authentic pieces from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries show natural dye variations, hand-spun base fabrics, and slight asymmetrical irregularities in the stitchwork. Natural dyes produce soft tonal shifts, whereas synthetic dyes often show harsh fading or bleeding when exposed to moisture.

Small square textiles like ilgich panels can be mounted inside custom perspex shadowbox frames to protect the delicate fibres while creating a focal point. Alternatively, they can be hung on a plain wall using conservation-grade velcro strip mounts.
