Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantle, serving as a focal architectural feature in nineteenth-century reception rooms. Walnut versions frequently feature classical proportions, fluted pilasters, and carved friezes reflective of Victorian craft.

Traditional Victorian overmantel mirrors were constructed using solid walnut or walnut veneers applied over a stable pine core, joined with mortise and tenon techniques. The glass plate was secured from behind using wooden backing boards fastened with hand-cut screws or nails.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved timber accents, subtle oxidation or silvering marks on the original glass plate, and hand-planed wooden backing boards showing age-related darkening. Tool marks and irregular joint fitting also indicate original craftsmanship.

A substantial wooden mirror can be mounted above a fireplace mantle or positioned atop a modern console table to add depth and historical balance. Pairing rich walnut tones against light neutral walls highlights the detailed architectural carving.

Dust the detailed timber carving using a dry soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Maintain the timber finish with a light application of natural beeswax polish, ensuring glass cleaner is applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the frame.
