Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide, horizontally proportioned wall mirror designed to hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the Victorian era, these mirrors served to reflect light across reception rooms and were crafted with detailed carved wooden frames featuring botanical motifs and scrollwork.

Late Victorian overmantel mirrors were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring high-relief timber carvings. The glass plates were manufactured with heavy silvered backing and held securely within solid wood rear panels.

Authentic Victorian carved mirrors feature hand-carved relief detailing with subtle natural variations and original wood backing boards secured by historical fixings. The mirror glass often shows age-appropriate desilverisation or minor foxing, while the timber exhibits an authentic, aged patina.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast, console table, or sideboard to establish a historic architectural focal point. The dark timber tones and dimensional carvings create contrast against neutral wall surfaces or deep contemporary paint colours.

Dust the carved frame regularly using a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clear accumulation from carved recesses. Apply clear beeswax polish sparingly once per year to preserve the timber moisture, and clean the glass plate using a lightly dampened cloth without contacting the wooden frame.
