Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The chaise longue gained widespread popularity during the 19th century as a piece of reclining seating designed for day-time resting in private boudoirs and drawing rooms. Combining elements of a couch and an armchair, it was frequently termed a fainting couch in mid-to-late Victorian social customs.

Frame structures were predominantly carved from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, supported by coil-sprung seats and horsehair padding. Outer upholstery varied from printed cotton chintz and silk damask to heavy velvet, supported on turned wooden legs with brass castors.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned or hand-carved hardwood frames, original brass castors with period fixings, traditional webbing and horsehair stuffing, and asymmetrical arm or back support structures.

A Victorian chaise longue functions effectively as an accent seat at the foot of a bed, alongside a bay window, or within a formal living room layout. Placing it against neutral wall treatments allows the distinctive silhouette and upholstery pattern to serve as a focal point.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to avoid fabric fading and wood desiccation. Vacuum the upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment, and treat wooden legs with natural beeswax polish to maintain the original finish.
