Antique George II Mahogany Chippendale Period Chest of Drawers C.1750

18th century
Description

A George II mahogany chest of drawers, the richly figured single-plank moulded top set over four long graduated cockbeaded pine-lined drawers adorned with pierced fret brass hardware, above a deep base moulding raised on front and rear ogee bracket feet.

The low stature and compact footprint are characteristic of mid-18th-century proportions, offering a grounded architectural presence with substantial storage capacity.

Very good antique condition with an authentic country-house patina and surface wear consistent with age. Minor historic repairs and small losses to the cockbeading along with minor age lines to the top and sides. The drawers sit slightly proud, a characteristic testament to the preservation of the original 18th-century runners. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1750.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after the reign of King George II and the influential cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, this mid-18th-century style is characterised by balanced proportions, dense mahogany timber, ogee or bracket feet, and ornate brass hardware.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense mahogany, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, oak or pine secondary framing, and pierced cast brass plate handles with matching key escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn drawer linings, distinct uneven hand-cut dovetails, original cast brass fittings with natural oxidisation, and minor wood shrinkage consistent with age.

Position the piece in an entryway, bedroom, or living space alongside contemporary artwork and textured neutral fabrics to balance the rich dark wood tones.

Dust regularly with a dry microfiber cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the timber clear of direct heat sources and moisture.
