The inscription almost certainly refers to HMS Briton, a 1,831-ton wooden screw corvette launched in 1869. Known for her "ram-bow" and sail-and-steam propulsion, she served extensively on the East Indies Station.
Naval Chaplains were high-ranking officers of the "After-Guard," and their quarters were situated in the most stable and prestigious part of the ship—the stern (aft).
