Description

A superb Glasgow school brass oval brass planter with embossed decoration and cast fittings c.1900. Oblong form with rounded ends, the solid brass sides with interlocking geometric embossed decoration in typical Glasgow school of arts design. Cast brass feet to the base and ring drop handles to the sides. Excellent quality and presented in immaculate condition with a rich polish. The Glasgow School style originated in Scotland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a distinct branch of the Arts and Crafts movement. It is defined by linear forms, geometric structure, stylized botanical motifs, and Celtic revival repousse work, frequently rendered in hammered brass or copper.

Planters of this era were predominantly constructed from sheet brass or copper. Artisans utilised repousse and chasing techniques to create raised decorative patterns against stippled backgrounds, securing components with rivets, folded seams, or cast metal feet and handles.
