Antique Regency Period Rosewood Sofa Table

19th century
Description

A stunning antique Regency period rosewood sofa table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1810-1820 period.

It is of outstanding quality, the rosewood has gorgeous grain patterns and colour tones. It stands on finely detailed legs with platform feet and brass casters beneath. This table has two drawers at the front and two dummy drawers at the back, so it looks identical from both sides. The drawers have brass handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The two drop down leaves can be lifted to extend the surface area and they rest on out swinging supports.

We have had this recently stripped and re-polished, the condition is superb for its age.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sofa table from the Regency period, produced between roughly 1811 and 1830, was designed to sit behind a sofa or against a wall, typically featuring drop-flap ends, frieze drawers, and a slender trestle base.

Cabinetmakers of the era favoured dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and zebrawood, frequently incorporating brass stringing, turned brass handles, and castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-carved detailing on trestle supports, original brass hardware, and natural wood grain variation characteristic of cut rosewood veneer.

Position the piece directly behind a sofa, along an entrance hallway as a console, or beneath a window, pairing it with balanced lighting fixtures and decorative objects.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax sparingly while keeping the furniture clear of direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent movement in the wood.
