19th Century Italian Walnut Commode

19th century
Description

19th Century Italian Walnut Commode

19th Century Italian Walnut Commode with Marble Top.

In the Empire style, this commode has three drawers flanked by columns with ormolu base and capital mounts. The marble top is grey and white and in the frieze below is a concealed drawer. It stands on tapering decorative feet. This has a great example of the use of bookmatched veneers, the timber being matched across all of the drawer fronts and the frieze to create a striking symmetrical effect. The sides also feature bookmatched timbers and this is a good sign of quality.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian Empire commodes from the 19th century draw inspiration from classical Greco-Roman architecture, featuring architectural elements such as column pilasters, symmetry, and heavy bases. They frequently incorporate highly figured wood veneers, such as walnut or mahogany, paired with marble tops.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frameworks with fine veneers such as walnut, rosewood, or mahogany applied to drawer fronts. Tops are often fashioned from native or imported marble, while drawer handles and escutcheons are constructed from cast brass or bronze.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, hand-sawn back panels, and natural wear around original locks or escutcheons. The marble top often shows subtle hand-finished bevels and historic surface wear rather than machine-cut precision.

A commode serves as a focal piece in a hallway, living area, or bedroom, pairing effectively with modern artwork mounted directly above the marble top. Balancing the rich walnut tone with clean architectural wall surfaces and subtle contemporary lighting accentuates its classical lines.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the original patina. The marble top should be wiped with a damp cloth using pH-neutral liquid soap, avoiding acidic cleaning agents that etch or discolour the stone.
