Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Open salt cellars were placed on dining tables to hold coarse salt before the invention of anti-caking agents allowed for modern salt shakers. Diners used small salt spoons to take salt from the vessel and season their meals.

Salt reacts chemically with silver, causing rapid corrosion and pitting. Fitted cobalt blue glass liners were inserted into silver cellars to protect the metal while providing a visual contrast against the silver fretwork.

Authentic Victorian silver salts feature official assay office hallmarks indicating the silver standard, makers mark, and date letter. They often display period-specific techniques such as hand-pierced fretwork, bright-cut engraving, and cast feet.

Beyond formal table settings, salt cellars are frequently re-purposed as trinket dishes on a dressing table or bedside table to hold rings and small jewellery pieces.

Remove the glass liners and wash them separately in warm, soapy water. Polish the silver frame gently with a specialised silver polishing cloth, ensuring salt residue is promptly cleaned to prevent chemical reaction with the metal.
