Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, workshop sculptors across Europe produced classical and Art Nouveau portrait busts in alabaster. These decorative works drew inspiration from classical antiquities and natural forms, often representing allegorical figures, young women, or mythological subjects for private domestic interiors.

Sculptors often carved bi-colour pieces using contrasting sections of stone or different varieties of alabaster and marble joined together. Natural mineral inclusions provided distinctive colour variations, enabling artists to create separate tonal effects for hair, skin, and clothing.

Authentic period alabaster pieces display soft surface wear, hand-carved tool marks in less exposed areas, and natural stone veining that differs from cast resin reproductions. The stone remains cool to the touch and typically exhibits subtle surface patination accumulated over decades.

A carved portrait bust functions effectively as a focal decorative object when placed on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a tall bookshelf. Positioning the piece against a contrasting background or near indirect natural light highlights the translucency and carved details of the stone.

Alabaster is a soft, water-soluble mineral that must be kept dry and away from high humidity. Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or chemical solvents which permanently damage the porous stone.
