Rare and Fine Quality Early 19th Century French Empire Mahogany Centre Table with Marble Top, Stamped 'Jacob'

19th century
Description

A rare and fine quality early 19th century (circa 1815) French Empire mahogany centre table with marble top with Egyptian influences of oblong form, stamped 'JACOB'.

This table consists of an off white marble top of oblong form supported on a mahogany base, the top of the base stamped 'JACOB' - we are not able to find proof this table is by Jacob but the style of the table would certainly fall into the period of his furniture.

The base consists of a superbly carved frieze of stylised anthemion with square panels to each corner with carved star decoration.

This leads down to the fine quality supports, each being reeded with carved lattice work decoration with carved lotus leaf design to both the top and bottom, these supports leading down to a decorative base with carved stars below the supports and scrolling acanthus decoration with carved paterae.

The base all joined with a central moulded stretcher with carved star decoration to the top with harebell and foliate carved decoration terminating with turned ball feet.

This table consists of Egyptian influences and carved decoration similar to those found on pieces by Henri Jacob (1753-1824) who was cousin of the famous cabinetmaker, Georges Jacob - as mentioned we cannot authenticate the stamp 'JACOB' as being genuine or not but the table is certainly of excellent quality and was made by a fine maker.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Please note: the bronze displayed on the table is not included in the price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire furniture originated during the reign of Napoleon I, characterised by classical Greco-Roman proportions, dark timbers such as mahogany, architectural columns, and carved motifs including acanthus leaves and star rosettes.

These tables typically feature solid and veneered mahogany timber bases, fitted with marble tops, hand-carved friezes, and sturdy trestle or pedestal structures.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved classical architectural details, traditional hand-cut joinery, thick cut veneers over oak carcases, and period maker stamps or signatures from established workshops.

Position the piece in a central foyer or spacious hall as a focal point, paired with contemporary artwork or minimalist decor to balance the dark timber and classical carving.

Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner designed for natural stone to prevent etching, while polishing the mahogany frame with natural beeswax to protect the historic surface finish.
