Bourdois & Bloch Paris Porcelain Lace Group with Harp

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A decorative French porcelain lace group from the Paris atelier of M.E. Clauss/ Bourdois & Bloch, dating to circa 1868–1887. The group reflects the Rococo Revival taste popular during the Second Empire period and combines finely modelled figures with elaborate lacework and colourful enamel decoration.

The composition shows a standing gentleman beside a seated young lady behind a harp. The tall harp gives the piece a more sculptural appearance than is usually found in smaller Paris porcelain lace groups and creates a strong cabinet display presence.

The bodies are made in glazed hard-paste porcelain, while the lace elements are executed in biscuit porcelain using the French “porcelain lace” technique, where real lace was coated in porcelain slip and burned away during firing.

The underside bears the underglaze crossed-swords mark used by the Paris porcelain atelier of M.E. Clauss, later associated with Bourdois & Bloch. The porcelain bodies were most likely produced in Limoges and decorated in Paris. Historical references record that the workshop specialised in luxury porcelain, including table services, vases, groups and statuettes inspired by Chardin, Watteau and Boucher. The company later continued under the Porcelaine de Paris name.

Porcelain lace is a ceramic decorative technique developed in the 18th and 19th centuries where real textile lace was soaked in liquid porcelain slip before being attached to a figure and fired, burning away the fabric and leaving rigid porcelain behind.

These items were constructed from hard-paste porcelain, painted by hand with overglaze polychrome enamels, and highlighted with burnished leaf gilding and hand-applied porcelain lace trimming.

Appraisers examine factory marks such as the crossed swords or stippled marks, evaluate the density of the hard-paste body, and inspect the precision of hand-painted floral enamelling.

Display the piece inside a glass cabinet, on a sideboard, or atop a console table where dedicated accent lighting highlights the detailed texture of the porcelain lace.

Dust fragile areas using a soft camel-hair brush or compressed air, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that could damage delicate lace structures or cold-painted gilding.
