Pair of Late 19th-century Mahogany Hepplewhite-style Armchairs (Carvers), C.1870

19th century
For Sale by Leeds Antiques
Description

Pair of Late 19th-Century Mahogany Hepplewhite-Style Armchairs

A very good pair of late 19th-century mahogany open armchairs in the Hepplewhite revival taste, dating to circa 1870–1885. Well made and of good, substantial weight, each chair features an elegant oval back with crisply moulded frames and a pierced splat of interlaced serpentine forms, centred by a carved rosette. The sweeping arms terminate in scrolled ends and flow naturally into square, tapering front legs with slightly splayed rear supports, the whole united by H-stretchers for strength and stability.

The seats are traditionally upholstered in a high-quality dark blue horsehair fabric, finished with brass stud edging. The design, timber selection, and quality of workmanship place these chairs firmly within the better class of late 19th-century cabinetmaking, reflecting the continued popularity of Hepplewhite’s neoclassical patterns during the Victorian period.

Also available is a related set of six dining chairs by the same maker, with matching upholstery and closely related detailing.

A full set of additional images is available on request.

Dimensions (approximate):

Height: 97 cm (38 1/4 in)

Width: 65 cm (25 1/2 in)

Depth: 54.5 cm (21 1/2 in)

Seat height: 45.75 cm (18 in)

Condition:

Structurally very sound throughout, with no loose joints. The frames retain an attractive, well-preserved surface with only minor marks and small running repairs consistent with age and use. Upholstery is structurally very good; the horsehair fabric shows light blemishes but remains presentable and serviceable. Cleaned and waxed, and ready for immediate use. As with all antique furniture, subtle signs of age form an integral part of the character and authenticity of the chairs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after 18th-century cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite, this style is characterised by lightweight, elegant proportions, shield or oval backrests, and delicate carved splats often depicting wheat sheaves or Prince of Wales feathers.

These chairs typically feature solid dense mahogany frames with mortise and tenon joinery, intricately hand-carved back splats, and upholstered seats often finished with decorative brass studded trim.

Look for natural hand-carving marks on the oval back, authentic shrinkage in the solid wood joints, original square tapered legs with H-stretchers, and historic patina on the mahogany surfaces.

These carver chairs function exceptionally well as head-of-table accent seating in a dining room, as occasional armchairs flanking a sideboard, or as elegant desk chairs in a home office.

Maintain the polished wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish twice yearly, whilst keeping the upholstery away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading.
