Description

Mid-18th Century English Walnut Side Chair with Pierced Splat Back, c.1740–1760

A good mid-18th century English walnut side chair, c.1740–1760, with an attractive transitional design combining earlier George II influences with details moving towards the Chippendale period. The chair has a shaped crest rail above a finely proportioned pierced vertical splat back, set between shaped rear uprights, giving it a light and elegant appearance.

The lower section retains a pleasing earlier character, with cabriole front legs, shaped front rail and rounded pad-style feet. The chair is constructed with a traditional drop-in seat, later upholstered in a patterned fabric. The walnut has a warm, mellow colour with good age, surface and patination, giving the chair an honest decorative presence.

A very usable period chair, well suited as an occasional chair, bedroom chair, desk chair or as part of a mixed group of early English seating.

Dimensions:

Height: 93.75 cm / 36 7/8 inches

Width: 57 cm / 22 1/2 inches

Depth: 52 cm / 20 1/2 inches

Seat height: 47 cm / 18 1/2 inches

Condition:

Good condition overall. The chair is structurally sound, with no loose joints and no significant signs of damage or repairs. There is some old worm, most noticeably to the back right foot, but the leg remains structurally secure. The bottom surface of that foot is a little uneven. The drop-in seat is structurally sound. The fabric cover is later and has some marks. There are the expected old marks, wear and minor surface blemishes commensurate with age and use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian side chairs from the mid-18th century typically feature shaped top rails, openwork or pierced central splats, balanced proportions, and cabriole front legs ending in pad or ball-and-claw feet.

English furniture makers of this period primarily utilised solid walnut and mahogany for frames, paired with mortise and tenon joinery, timber stretchers, and woven or fabric drop-in seats.

Authentic period chairs exhibit hand-cut joinery, irregular construction marks beneath the seat frame, natural oxidisation on untouched timber surfaces, and pegs securing the mortise and tenon joints.

A single period side chair can be positioned as a desk chair in a study, an occasional seat in a hallway, or an accent piece in a bedroom to create visual contrast against contemporary decor.

Maintain walnut furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, applying natural beeswax along the grain periodically, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
