Antique Silver Pin Cushion - Railway Lamp

1900 - 1920
Description

This is an unusually large antique sterling silver pin cushion.

Fashioned as a railway lamp, it is clearly hallmarked for Chester 1914 with the maker's mark for Joseph & Richard Griffin. The base is filled to add stability and neatly finished with leather. The top comes off to reveal a large and useful void and the 'lamp' at the front is actually a mirror. The lid fits snugly. There are a couple of small knocks around the rim but nothing to worry about. A novelty!

Dimensions:

Height: 9cm

Width: 6cm

Depth: 5cm.

The pound coin is for size reference.

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, novelty pin cushions were decorative silver tools crafted in whimsical forms such as animals, shoes, or lanterns. They served functional sewing purposes while also functioning as collectible decorative items for dressing tables or sewing boxes.

These items were typically constructed from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring a velvet, dark wool, or horsehair-filled cushion insert. Finer examples, such as miniature lamps, frequently incorporated glass components like convex lenses to replicate full-scale lanterns.

Authentic British examples feature official hallmark stamps detailing silver purity, assay office location, makers mark, and a date letter. Genuine antique pieces also display period-correct construction lines, light surface oxidisation, and natural age-related wear to the fabric insert.

These small decorative objects function well when arranged on a desk, bookshelf, or vanity tray alongside other silver collectibles. They add historic character and textural variation to curated display cabinets and tabletop vignettes.

Clean the silver metal surfaces gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, taking care to avoid touching the fabric cushion. Keep the textile insert dry and protected from direct sunlight to prevent deterioration of the original fibres.
