Pair of Fine Victorian Inlaid Walnut Circular Footstools, Circa 1860

19th century
Description

A charming and decorative pair of Victorian walnut circular footstools, dating to circa 1860, beautifully made and of elegant proportions.

Each stool is crafted in richly figured walnut with finely executed inlaid geometric banding to the lower frieze, adding a refined decorative detail that elevates these beyond the ordinary. Raised on neat ceramic feet, the stools have a pleasing low profile and attractive classical form.

The upholstered tops are covered in what appears to be an older floral needlework/tapestry fabric, lending warmth and character, with a softly timeworn country house aesthetic. Whether retained as they are for a relaxed traditional look or reupholstered to suit a new interior scheme, they offer excellent versatility.

Wonderfully useful decorative pieces, ideal as footstools, fireside stools, dressing room seating, or even as occasional accent pieces in a sitting room or bedroom.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th century Victorian footstools often feature round walnut frames, detailed marquetry or parquetry bands, and needlepoint upholstery, designed primarily for fireside comfort in formal reception rooms.

Craftsmen commonly utilised solid walnut or walnut veneers combined with micro-marquetry inlay bands, supported by small ceramic or glass feet, and topped with hand-stitched wool needlepoint textiles.

Authentic pieces display hand-turned wood construction, period-correct white ceramic feet attached via original metal screws, and genuine hand-worked tapestry with age-appropriate wear to the underside frame.

Positioned near a hearth, beside an armchair, or arranged beneath a coffee table, these low-profile stools introduce texture, historical detail, and warmth to modern living areas.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish, and gently vacuum the textile top using a low-suction brush attachment to prevent fibre damage.
