Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian writing desks typically feature solid hardwood construction, predominantly mahogany or walnut, with hand-tooled leather writing surfaces. They commonly incorporate turned or carved legs, brass castors, and hand-dovetailed drawers designed for domestic studies and professional offices during the nineteenth century.

Craftsmen during the Victorian era used dense timber such as Cuban or West Indian mahogany, oak, and walnut. Secondary woods like pine or oak were utilised for drawer linings, while desk tops often incorporated gilt-tooled cowhide leather and brass for castors and lock escutcheons.

Authentic nineteenth-century desks show hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, original cast-brass or wooden knob handles, and natural wear around the leg bases and footwells. Examining the underside reveals hand-sawn timber marks and age-appropriate oxidisation of the wood grain.

A Victorian mahogany desk serves as a focal piece in a contemporary home office, study, or living room alcove. Pairing the warm timber tones with muted neutral walls, modern task lighting, and structured seating creates a balanced contrast between historical and modern elements.

Maintain the timber by applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly, buffing along the direction of the grain. Clean the leather inset with a soft, slightly damp cloth and apply a leather conditioner periodically to prevent cracking, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators.
