Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire dressing tables, or coiffeuses, produced during the early 19th century are defined by neoclassical symmetry, architectural columns, flame mahogany veneers, and gilded bronze ormolu mountings. They frequently feature integrated swing mirrors, small trinket drawers, and specialized surfaces for personal grooming.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid oak or pine frameworks veneered with high-grade Cuban or flame mahogany. Secondary elements include mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu) mounts, cast brass hardware, mirror glass, and occasionally leather or marble writing and dressing surfaces.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak secondary timbers, hand-chased heavy cast ormolu mounts, and period-correct fixings such as hand-threaded steel screws. Neoclassical decorative motifs like architectural columns, palmettes, and classical urn capitals are central features of the style.

An antique dressing table functions well in a master bedroom or dedicated dressing room as a vanity unit. Alternatively, it can be styled in an entryway or study as an occasional writing desk or accent surface paired with contemporary seating and lighting.

Mahogany surfaces should be dusted with a soft, lint-free cloth and polished periodically using natural beeswax. Ormolu mounts must be kept dry and dusted gently with a soft brush; chemical metal polishes should be avoided as they remove original gilt finishes and accelerate patination.
