Antique Regency Style Figured Mahogany Oval Dining Table Satinwood Crossbanded 8 Seater

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique Regency style figured mahogany oval dining table of outstanding quality, featuring a beautifully selected and richly figured top with striking natural grain throughout. The surface is framed by a finely executed satinwood crossbanded border with delicate line inlays, giving the piece a crisp and refined edge that immediately signals quality.

The top is particularly impressive, with deep flowing figuring that creates a symmetrical and almost flame-like pattern across the surface. This is the sort of timber selection seen in higher-end cabinetmaking and gives the table real presence in a room.

It stands on an elegant satinwood base with a central turned column leading down to four swept legs, each finely shaped and terminating in original brass caps and castors. The contrast between the warm mahogany top and the lighter satinwood base adds a sophisticated and decorative element, making it far more interesting than a standard dining table of the period.

Tables of this form were designed to be both practical and visually impressive, commonly used in formal dining rooms where they could comfortably seat guests while also acting as a centrepiece when not in use. The oval shape is particularly desirable as it softens a room and allows for easy conversation and movement around the table.

Condition report

Very good antique condition with a beautifully maintained polished surface. Light age-related wear as expected but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The table is solid, stable and ready for use.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency dining tables, originating in early 19th-century Britain, are defined by classical proportions, pedestal bases, and high-quality timber veneers. Many feature tilt-top mechanisms designed to allow the tabletop to be stored vertically against a wall to conserve space when not in use.

The primary timber for Regency dining tables is mahogany, often chosen for its stability and rich grain figures such as flame or curl. Accent inlays and crossbanded borders frequently utilise lighter contrasting woods such as satinwood, rosewood, or boxwood.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut brass latch mechanisms beneath the tabletop, solid brass castors, and hand-planed underside construction. The timber grain on original veneer tops exhibits natural patination and age-appropriate wear around the edges.

A traditional Regency oval table can be balanced in contemporary settings by surrounding it with clean-lined modern dining chairs or upholstered seats. Placing a large neutral rug underneath helps ground the dark wood tones within an open-plan space.

Preserve the finish by applying a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain twice a year and buffing with a soft cloth. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture sources to prevent the wood veneer from lifting or fading.
