SYNOPSIS

The author, John Gauden (1605-1662), was an Anglican cleric, a staunch defender of the Anglican ministry and episcopacy. He was later made the Bishop of Exeter.

This work laments the decline of the Anglican Church during the Commonwealth period, comparing its former glory with its distressed state under Cromwell and urging for its restoration. This single volume comprises of 'IV books' covering the church's, 'former constitution', 'present condition', 'visible causes', and 'probable cures of her distempers'.

In essence, the work is a theological and political commentary that critiqued the rise of sects like Anabaptists and the dismantling of the traditional Church of England liturgy. It served as a major protestant defence of the Anglican faith and a call for order during the final months of the Interregnum.
