Description

The camel-hair field contains small stylised motifs with 'cross' motifs appearing in the neck of the salt-bag (namakdan) symbolising protection. The dark aubergine border contains a rams-horn design with a slightly corroded dark-brown colour caused by the iron mordant. The back of the bag is woven in plain-weave technique.

In good, complete condition, this archaic namakdan was made by Baluch nomads in western Afghanistan circa 1870-1880.
