Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late seventeenth-century seating, covering the Jacobean and Carolean eras, is defined by solid oak timber construction, carved top rails with scroll or floral motifs, turned legs, and sturdy stretchers. During this period, chairs began transitioning from boxy, heavy forms into slightly lighter silhouettes featuring vertical back slats or balusters.

Seventeenth-century chairs were predominantly constructed from native English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs (trunnels). Seats were typically solid timber panels, and decorative elements were hand-carved using gouges and chisels.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hewn surfaces, irregular saw marks, and pegged joinery where pegs often protrude slightly due to wood shrinkage over centuries. The timber will show deep natural oxidation, wear on lower stretchers from footrests, and slight asymmetry from manual crafting.

These dark oak chairs create striking contrast when paired with modern minimalist dining tables made of glass, marble, or lighter timber. Placing them against neutral plaster walls highlights their sculpted silhouettes and rich historical texture without overwhelming the room.

Keep oak furniture away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to prevent timber movement and splitting. Clean surfaces using a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the original patina.
