Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe between 1830 and 1848, these mirrors are characterised by clean rectangular silhouettes with rounded upper corners, understated mouldings, and leaf gilding.

Traditional pieces were constructed with a solid timber core covered in gesso and clay bole, finished with hand-applied silver or gold leaf, and fitted with glass.

Authentic examples feature original timber backboards, subtle wear or coloured bole showing through the gilding, minor foxing on the reflective surface, and hand-etched geometric detailing on the frame moulding.
