17th Century Carved Oak Coffer

17th century
Description

A finely carved 17th century oak coffer of good proportions.

The three panel front boasts a deeply carved rampant lion to the central panel with two intricately carved foliate designs to the left and right. The panels are divided with a large  flower, its head flanking the escutcheon and heavily leafed stem descending. Each border is heavily decorated, the gadrooned edge of the lid rather charmingly remaining unfinished. The carvings are likely later, circa. 19th century, as is the fantastic gothic escutcheon which is in the form of a mythical creature with its mouth agape. Later but historic hinges.

Wear commensurate with age in places as is to be expected in a piece of this age, but generally the coffer is in a very good solid condition and highly attractive.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a joiner-made wooden chest featuring framed panel construction, a hinged lid, and decorative hand-carved motifs typical of the Jacobean and Carolean eras.

These coffers were constructed from slow-grown British oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, often fitted with hand-forged iron hinges and locks.

Authentic period examples display hand-hewn tool marks, irregular peg placement, historic ironwork, and natural shrinkage or patination consistent with centuries of age.

An antique coffer functions as a grounding focal point in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or as an accent table, adding warmth and architectural depth to contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
