Antique Oak Settle England 1600s

17th century
Description

Antique Oak Settle England 1600s. The settle is in excellent condition throughout and retains a wonderful original patina.

The settle is of a lovely small size and profusely carved throughout. The seat is Leather studded on Oak and retains faint signs of original paint/gilding.

Structurally the settle is totally solid.

I purchased this settle from an estate in Devon, England. The settle had been in the family for many generations and they mentioned it originally came from a Manor House in the Cotswolds, England.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A settle is a wooden bench featuring a high back and armrests, originally designed in early modern Europe to provide seating while shielding occupants from draughts in domestic interiors.

Settles from this period were crafted from solid native oak, using hand-poured pegging and mortise and tenon joinery without reliance on modern adhesives or metal screws.

Authentic period oak displays evidence of hand-planed timber, uneven timber shrinkage along the grain, wooden dowels flush or proud of the joints, and natural wear patterns on armrests and foot rails.

A carved oak settle functions as a focal architectural element in an entryway, hallway, or dining space, contrasting against plain plaster walls and modern neutral textiles.

Maintain stable humidity to prevent timber movement, avoid direct heat sources, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the historical surface patination.
