Technical Description

A fine 18th century opaque twist wine glass, dating to circa 1760. It features a rare fully rib-moulded ogee bowl above a single-series opaque twist stem, comprising two pairs of spiral gauzes. Raised on a conical foot.

Historical Context

Opaque twist stems were popular in the mid-18th century because they combined strong visual decoration with technical precision, using internal white spiral threads, tapes and gauzes to create a crisp, controlled pattern within the glass. Moulded bowls, such as rib or flute moulding, were occationally added to enhance light refraction, improve grip, and strengthen the bowl. This particular example has a single series stem which has a ratio of approx. 1:10 compared to the double series.
