1846 Philosophy of the Mind by Dr. Thomas Brown. (Complete Book Set)

19th century
Description

Lectures On The Philosophy Of The Mind by Dr. Thomas Brown (1778-1820). Complete in four volumes. Published by William Tait, Edinburgh, 1846.

Ex-libris. All four volumes are bound in a black blind-stamped cloth with gilt-stamped title and author to the spine. Each volume has a removable protective cover. The boards show shelf wear, volume III more so than the others with damage to the front board evident (please see photographs). All bindings remain tight.

There are some small numerical inscriptions to the beginning of Volume I. There is browning to the preliminary pages. The text itself remains clear and bright.

A scarce set.

SYNOPSIS

At the time of his death in 1820, and for some decades afterwards, Thomas Brown was a hugely celebrated philosopher. Lectures on the Philosophy of the Human Mind (1822) is a foundational philosophical work that explores consciousness, perceptions, emotion and moral philosophy. It analyses mental phenomena through observation rather than just abstract theory, making it highly influential in the history of psychology. The lectures were praised for their clarity and popularity at the time, bridging metaphysics with human experience.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian multi-volume book sets were produced during an era of expanding publishing, often bound in uniform cloth or leather with decorative gilt spine lettering. They were printed on heavy cotton-rag paper and compiled complete academic, philosophical, or literary works for personal and private institutional libraries.

Mid-19th-century book bindings typically utilised stiffened binders board covered in embossed cotton cloth or tanned leather. Spines were stamped with genuine gold leaf (gilt) for titling, and pages were printed on high-rag-content paper with hand-sewn bindings.

Authentic period books can be identified by inspecting the title page for the publishers imprint, publication date, and edition details. Evidence of age includes natural paper foxing, period-correct typography, hand-stitched binding signatures, and original paper shelf labels or bookplates.

Complete antique book sets can be displayed on dark wood bookshelves, arranged horizontally on coffee tables, or placed on writing desks to add height and texture. Incorporating multi-volume sets creates structure and visual balance within traditional or contemporary styled rooms.

Store antique books vertically in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight to prevent cloth fading and leather desiccation. Handle pages with clean, dry hands, avoid tight packing on shelves, and use clear archival Mylar covers to protect original bindings from dust and friction.
