A Fantastic Large Pair Antique French Ormolu Three-branch Wall Lights, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A large and imposing pair of antique French ormolu three-branch wall lights, circa 1880, in the Louis XV Rococo manner. Cast with exceptional fluidity and weight, each applique rises from a sweeping C-scroll backplate through a cascade of acanthus leaves, flowering branches, and naturalistic foliage to three scrolling candle arms, each terminating in a foliate drip pan and bayonet lamp fitting.

The scale of these pieces is considerable - at 75cm tall and 55cm wide they command a room in a way photographs cannot fully convey. The casting quality is of a high order: the acanthus work is crisp and deeply modelled throughout, with the characteristic asymmetry and movement that defines authentic Rococo bronzework of this period. The pieces have been adapted for electricity and will require rewiring to current UK standards prior to use.

A rare opportunity to acquire a large-scale matched pair in original condition. Pieces of this size and quality are seldom found together.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ormolu wall lights are decorative wall-mounted lighting fixtures crafted from gilt bronze, a technique popular in France from the eighteenth century through the nineteenth century. Characterised by intricate cast scrollwork and leaf motifs, these fixtures were designed to amplify candlelight or early electrical illumination across formal interiors.

Traditional French wall sconces were crafted using cast bronze or brass, which was subsequently fire-gilded using a gold-mercury amalgam known as ormolu. This process created a durable, bright gold-toned finish that complemented elaborately detailed Rococo and Neoclassical metalwork castings.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature heavy cast bronze construction with finely hand-chased surface details, such as crisp leaf veining and asymmetrical Rococo scrolls. Original examples often display subtle oxidisation on unseen rear surfaces, threaded assembly rods, and hand-cut threads or maker markings.

Antique ormolu wall lights create visual contrast when mounted against contemporary painted walls or textured wallpaper schemes. They function effectively in pairs flanking a mirror, lining a hallway, or positioned within alcoves to provide warm ambient accent lighting.

Dust gilt bronze regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent buildup in detailed carving. Avoid abrasive polishes, liquid cleaners, or water, as these can strip the original gold layer and expose the raw bronze beneath.
