Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style lighting originated in late eighteenth-century France, reflecting a return to classical Greek and Roman antiquity. Design features emphasise geometric symmetry, straight lines, and neoclassical motifs such as urns, garlands, and profile medallions, departing from the elaborate curves of the preceding Rococo period.

These fixtures were predominantly crafted from cast bronze or brass, which was subsequently finished with mercury gilding, ormolu, or gilded lacquer to achieve a bright golden appearance. Construction involves chased details on the scrolling arms, candle nozzles, and decorative backplates.

Authentic period and nineteenth-century revival pieces typically feature heavy cast metal with hand-chased surface details, visible hand-drawn threaded assembly on the reverse, and distinct weight. Later reproductions often display simpler machine chasing and modern wiring entry points.

Gilt wall lights are frequently positioned flanking a central architectural element, such as a large wall mirror, fireplace, or artwork, to create formal balance. The metallic surface contrasts against dark or neutral paint finishes in hallways, dining rooms, and reception spaces.

Dusting should be performed regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush to prevent build-up in detailed chasing. Abrasive metal polishes and chemical solvents must be avoided, as they permanently remove the delicate gilded surface.
