Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Neoclassical wall lights originated during the late eighteenth century, drawing design inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture. Key characteristics include symmetrical proportions, tapered backplates, urn finials, and foliate ornaments such as acanthus leaves and laurel swags.

These lighting fixtures are traditionally crafted from heavy cast brass or gilt bronze, also known as ormolu. The metal elements are cast in moulds, hand-chased to refine detail, and coated or lacquered to prevent oxidisation.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast metal construction with hand-chased surface details and hand-cut threaded components. Inspecting the reverse side often reveals hand-finished casting marks and natural, uneven surface patina consistent with historical manufacturing methods.

Position these fixtures in pairs within architectural alcoves, along hallways, or flanking a central mirror to create balance. The brass metallic tone provides contrast against both pale neutral backdrops and modern dark paint finishes.

Dust the metal surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive polishing compounds or chemical solvents, as these can damage original lacquered or gilded surface finishes.
