Fully Adjustable Oak Artist’s Studio Easel

19th century
Description

A substantial freestanding artist’s easel in solid oak, of robust and practical construction, designed for professional studio use. The piece is centred on a tall vertical mast with a sliding carriage, operated by a hand-cranked iron screw mechanism, allowing smooth and precise adjustment of canvas height to accommodate works of varying scale.

Both height and tilt are fully adjustable: the central support can be raised or lowered via the screw-driven system, while the mast itself is mounted on a pivot with a rear brace, enabling the working angle to be altered from upright to a more reclined position. This versatility would have suited a range of painting approaches, from detailed vertical work to broader compositions executed on a tilted surface.

The lower support ledge shows heavy paint accretions from prolonged use, complemented by an upper clamp to secure the canvas. The easel stands on a sturdy rectangular base fitted with castors for ease of movement, and is reinforced with iron stretchers to the rear for added stability.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Studio easels developed during the 18th and 19th centuries as dedicated furniture for professional artist ateliers. Unlike portable field easels, studio models were constructed with heavy wooden frames and mechanical height adjustments to support large-scale canvases securely during extended painting sessions.

Traditional studio easels are commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, beech, or mahogany to provide stability. Mechanical components, including winding cranks, ratchets, threaded screws, and castors, were typically fabricated from cast iron or solid brass.

Authentic studio easels display signs of practical use, such as paint splatters, canvas thumb-screw indentations, and natural wear around the winding crank and base. Look for cast iron mechanisms with period foundry marks and hand-cut joinery consistent with 19th or early 20th-century manufacture.

In contemporary interiors, studio easels function as statement display stands for framed artwork, mirrors, or large canvases. Placed in living areas, entryways, or open-plan offices, they add vertical structure and an industrial atelier aesthetic.

Clean the timber surfaces using a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish to preserve the wood and historic paint patina. Metal cranks and castors should be kept dry and periodically treated with light machine oil to maintain smooth mechanical operation.
