Large Late 19th Century Fully Adjustable Oak Artist’s Studio Easel

19th century
Description

Description

A substantial late 19th-century artist’s studio easel, strongly constructed in solid oak and retaining a wonderful working character. The central upright incorporates a geared winding mechanism, operated by the original wooden-handled crank, allowing the main picture ledge to be raised or lowered with ease. A separate sliding upper support secures canvases of varying heights, making the easel fully adjustable.

The broad splayed base provides excellent stability and is raised on four castors, allowing this large easel to be repositioned when required. Throughout, the oak has developed a rich, warm colour and displays numerous historic paint marks, surface wear and signs of prolonged studio use, giving the piece an especially appealing and authentic appearance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century studio easels were constructed with heavy timber frames and mechanical adjustment systems, such as ratchets or winding cranks, to support large canvases in professional artists workshops.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pitch pine, combined with brass or cast iron winding components and castors for mobility.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-joined construction, functional mechanical hardware with original patina, structural weight designed for stability, and legitimate operational wear on the timber.

An artists easel can be positioned as a floor-standing display apparatus for oversized artwork, photography, or large gilt mirrors within domestic or gallery settings.

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft dry cloth, applying clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the oak, and ensuring mechanical metal parts remain clean and lightly lubricated.
