Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a specialized piece of low portable furniture featuring vertical compartments designed to hold bound sheet music or periodicals. Originating in England during the late eighteenth century and named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the initial design, it became a staple of Regency-era drawing rooms.

During the Regency period, cabinetmakers primarily crafted Canterburys from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. Construction often incorporated turned spindles or slatted dividers, dovetail-jointed base drawers, and brass castors for portability.

Authentic Regency examples typically display distinct features such as deep grain figuring characteristic of Brazilian rosewood, hand-cut drawer joinery, turned legs, and original brass castors. Look for characteristic design elements including concave top rails and subtle turned wood drawer knobs.

In modern interior design, a Canterbury serves as an elegant accent piece beside a reading chair, sofa, or desk. Beyond its original function for sheet music, it effectively stores modern magazines, art books, or vinyl records while adding historic timber warmth to living spaces.

Dust the piece regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth following the wood grain. To preserve the rosewood finish and natural patina, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol sprays, silicones, or placement in direct sunlight and near strong heat sources.
