Antique Edwardian Mahogany Fold-over Card Table C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An impressive Edwardian mahogany fold-over card table in the Chippendale revival style. The hinged top folds open to a green baize playing surface with circular counter wells to the corners, all set over a swag-carved breakfront frieze with blind fretwork panels and raised on cabriole legs terminating in finely carved paw feet.

A versatile and decorative piece of pleasing scale suited to use as a side table in a hallway or drawing room, while the fold-over top offers a practical full-sized surface for cards or drinks when required.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age and use. There is a solid existing repair to one of the rear swing-out legs, along with minor losses to the carved swag and fretwork detail. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1900.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian fold-over card table is a gaming and occasional table produced around the turn of the twentieth century, designed with a double-leaf top that unfolds to expand the playing surface.

These tables were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often incorporating baize-lined interior playing surfaces, brass hinges, and hand-carved decorative elements.

Authentic period card tables typically exhibit fine proportions, smooth swivel or gate-leg opening mechanisms, period-correct metal hardware, and timber patination consistent with natural aging.

When closed, a fold-over card table functions effectively as a console or side table in an entryway, living room, or hallway, serving as a display surface for lighting and decorative items.

Dust the timber surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the grain, taking care to keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
