Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Treen refers to small domestic functional objects made entirely from wood, crafted prior to the mass production of plastics and metals. Snuff boxes were compact personal containers designed to hold finely ground tobacco for daily use during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Victorian treen items were usually carved from dense native timbers or fruitwoods, such as apple, pear, or walnut. These pieces were often detailed with bone, mother-of-pearl, or contrasting wood inlays to add geometric and symbolic patterns.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved contours, slight asymmetry from manual production, smooth interior wear from use, and a warm surface patination created by natural hand oils accumulated over decades.

Small carved wooden boxes function effectively as textured accents on stacked books, office desks, or open shelving units, contrasting well with modern ceramics, glass, and contemporary minimal surfaces.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent shrinkage or inlay loss. Wipe lightly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a sparingly small amount of clear beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface timber.
